But it wasn't always like this…

Before I had millions reading my words, I had five readers… and that was on a good month.

2014.

I hit ‘Publish’.

My first Medium article was out in the world. How exciting!

And it wasn’t a bad article either – I’d already been writing for 5 or 6 years so I (secretly) expected it will do quite well.

But I didn’t expect this…

all 12 claps & 1 comment came from one person… in 2024

I was prepared for this to be challenging… but wow.

It was a disaster – all that hard work for no one to see it. Not great.

But I dug up some faith, and decided to stick with it.

As I continued to write and share my writing online, I slowly began to realise something was missing. I learned that without this missing piece, even great writing would fail miserably.

I realised: There was a formula to writing well online.

But I found that everyone I was learning from had different ideas on what was the right thing to do. So I had to create my own guidelines.

I decided to write a lot. I’d do this so I’d learn through my little mistakes. It was one big experiment. Day in and day out.

A flopped article showed me a lot. I’d note down why some pieces of writing did well and others didn’t. I began to see patterns. Every time I saw something that could help me write a better article, I noted it down. 

Soon I had a list of things that I knew would practically predict the success of what I wrote.

Perhaps without even realising it back then, I’d created a working formula for effective writing in the modern world.

And this new ‘formula’ didn’t just work online – it seemed to work with writing anywhere.

So I decided to put this new understanding to the test & release my second book. This was in 2015:

People loved the book.

But I still wasn’t sure. Maybe I was ‘just lucky’. Maybe this formula wasn’t that big of a deal.

So I decided to test it on Twitter:

The results were insane.

And during that time my Medium audience was already so big I was making far more money from just writing on Medium than I ever used to make from being an illustrator.

This wasn’t ‘just luck’. What I was doing was really working.

… but would it work for other people too?

I sat down & documented everything. I wrote and rewrote every part.

I had created the first version of Online Writing Alchemy.

Then, with rather shaky hands & a healthy dose of self-doubt, I sent the link to one of my first coaching clients who also agreed to be the first customer for the course.

      AI is a tool I encourage you to use to help you brainstorm ideas, gather research and structure your words.

      But AI will not help you stand out from the crowd, who increasingly use AI to write their words. When you write with emotion, your readers will connect emotionally, too. This is something AI cannot do. AI cannot replace your energy, unique perspective, honesty, or voice. And that’s what readers want most of all.
